Teachers call for less change, study finds

The majority of staff in teaching jobs is calling for a reduction in the number of initiatives coming from Whitehall, a new study has said.

The report, by the National Foundation for Educational Research (NFER), has found that teachers' top priorities for the new government include more support for educational staff to do their job.

Almost half (46 per cent) of the 1,400 primary and secondary teachers in England surveyed described the Labour and Tory proposals to encourage mergers and takeovers of underperforming schools as "a bad idea".

NFER's Peter Rudd said that the teacher's "overall message is clear - more support, stabilising policy and reducing initiatives rank far more highly than suggestions of change".

In other news, the Association of Teachers and Lecturers (ATL) has told the country's political parties to leave education alone and stop using it as a political football.

Lesley Ward, the president of ATL, said that education has become stuck on a merry-go-round, with the same policies and discussions being repeated endlessly.
