A faith school teacher in Blackburn has won the Teacher of the Year accolade in the first ever Association of Muslim Schools UK awards, a local news report has said.

According to The Citizen, more than 400 staff in teaching jobs and members of the association attended a conference in Leicester to see Nusrat Mohammed of Islamiyah school, Willow street, win the coveted award.
She has been teaching maths at Islamiyah school for the last eight years.

"She is not just a brilliant teacher but also a wonderful colleague," head teacher Zarina Seedat was quoted as saying by the publication.

The Teacher of the Year award, sponsored by Tauheedul Islam Girls School, received the most nominations.

In other news, Michael Morpurgo, the former children's laureate, has championed a children's writing award with the support of West End musical Wicked.

The award is aimed at youngsters whose parents "do not go to literary festivals", Mr Morpurgo told The Times.
