The work of secondary teachers in Plymouth has been recognised for helping adding value to pupils' GCSE results, a news report has said.

According to This is Plymouth, three local secondary schools - Coombe Dean in Elburton, John Kitto in Honicknowle and Stoke Damerel in Stoke - were among the 614 schools that were represented at an event in London celebrating their high value-added scores in last year's GCSE exams.

Stoke Damerel was the 12th best in England and Wales in the GCSEs, based on the government's contextual value-added calculation (CVA) for student attainment. John Kitto scored its best results in two decades with 36 per cent of GCSE entrants achieving five or more A* to Cs with maths and English.

Coombe Dean also finished in the top 200 nationally for CVA at GCSE level, the publication added.

In other news, alternative qualifications such as BTECs and OCR Nationals are corrupting the work of science teachers, research from the Assessment and Qualifications Alliance has claimed.
