A national charity is encouraging pupils and parents to think about the benefits of making it to class on foot as part of this years Walk to School Week, running from 17 to 21 May.
The Walk to School campaign, launched by Living Streets, says that about half of children don't walk to school on a regular basis while an increasing number of children are being driven to school in a car, in news that might be of interest to staff in
teaching jobs.
According to the charity, the trend is contributing to reduced physical activity and increased childhood obesity and air pollution.
Commenting on the benefits of walking, Catherine Hanly, parenting expert at online discussion forum mumsnet, said: "It's healthier, it gives parents a chance to talk to their kids and it's social too - as children can chat to other friends and pupils on the way to school."
She added that many schools are offering a bus service but parents agree "that if you can choose a school within walking distance of your home, then that's the best option".
