Curriculum should include food lessons, says My School Lunch

Schools need to foster children's interest in food, Arnold Fewell, managing director of My School Lunch, has said, in news that might be of interest to staff in teaching jobs.

"It's important to create an interest in food through the curriculum…having a passion and a love of food from an early age, and learning about the different types of food around the world, can be great fun and enjoyable," he noted.

Mr Fewell also called for the introduction of a whole school approach to school catering and healthy eating as new figures have shown that pupils are eating unhealthy amounts of salt and fat from fast food takeaways at lunchtime.

The report was carried out by London environmental health food teams on behalf of Consensus Action on Salt and Health and prompted Rob Rees, the School Food Trust's chairman, to suggest that children should not leave the school premises during their lunch break to prevent them from buying unhealthy food.
