Leeds teachers to build a school in Africa

Two secondary teachers in Leeds are planning to set up a school for underprivileged children in Zambia, a local news report has said.

According to the Yorkshire Evening Post, Martin Simbeye, who teaches mathematics at Pudsey Priesthorpe high school, and Karolyn Simbeye, a teacher of religious education at Morley high school, hope to be in the African country by autumn next year, where they will start from scratch with the ambitious project.

"We've called the school Vinjeru, which means wisdom, with the symbol of a kite as we believe that our school will help the next generation of Zambians to fly high," Ms Simbeye was quoted as saying by the publication.

The couple, who have a seven-month-old baby, have been staging fundraising events to gather the £50,000 needed for the school's first two years.

In other news, a primary teacher from South Wales has travelled to Uganda as part of efforts to strengthen relationships between sister schools, Wales Online has reported.
