Members of the NASUWT teaching union were awarded some £8.8 million in compensation last year, the group has announced.
According to the union, the money was given to staff in
teaching jobs who were the victims of discrimination, unfair dismissal, unlawful deduction of wages or personal injury.
Chris Keates, the general secretary of the NASUWT, said she was pleased the union had managed to successfully pursue the demands of many of its members, adding, however, that "it is of deep concern that many of the claims could have been avoided if employers at school and local authority level abided by their statutory duties and responsibilities".
She noted that millions of pounds of public money could be saved if employers were more serious about their legal responsibilities.
In other news, the Association of Teachers and Lecturers, a union representing education professionals, has urged political parties to trust teachers' judgement when it comes to issues relating to curriculum and assessment.
