Parent run schools will not work in practice, Sue Fieldman, regional editor of the Good Schools Guide, has said.

In news that might be of interest to staff in teaching jobs, Ms Fieldman acknowledged that parents want to have a say in their children's education, adding, however, that many of them don't have the time or the experience in running schools.

"In theory it is great, in practice I think it is going to be a nightmare unless the parents actually use one of the established companies and organisations that say they are going to come into the market," she said.

Her comments came as the BBC revealed that two senior Conservative figures roasted Tory proposals to set up schools with state funding.

Paul Carter, the leader of Kent county council, said that financing parents to create their own "free schools" would threaten the budgets of some local schools.
