New figures have revealed that the average number of pupils per school in England has increased since Labour came to power.
Minister of State for Schools and Learners Vernon Coaker said that the statistics show that more parents than ever want to see their children educated by those in
teaching jobs at some of the country's top-ranked state institutions.
Mr Coaker told the Telegraph: "Schools have increased in size because parents and children want to go to them.
"We have encouraged the expansion of popular and successful schools so that more parents can choose to send their children to them."
However, the Conservative Party has blamed the rise from 852 to 976 pupils per institution on the closure of 350 secondary schools in England since 1997, according to the newspaper.
Shadow Secretary of State for Children, Schools and Families Michael Gove has recently been providing further details of the 'free schools' system the Tories have said they will implement if they come to power at the next general election.
