Ofsted calls for 'good and impartial' careers advice in schools

Schools watchdog Ofsted has called on the education sector to provide sufficient careers advice to young people in order help them make the best decisions about their future, in news which may affect those in teaching jobs.

"It is important that all young people can get good and impartial information, advice and guidance to enable them, together with their parents and carers, to make well-informed choices about their future", said Christine Gilbert, Her Majesty's chief inspector of education, children's services and skills.

Her comments follow a new report by the watchdog which revealed that the level of support young people were receiving "varied significantly" across the country, and in some cases failed to meet the requirements of those "most at risk of ending up not in education, employment or training".

In other news, staff in teaching jobs at some of England's top-ranked state schools would see an end to Ofsted inspections under a Conservative government, according to shadow secretary of state for children, schools and families Michael Gove.
