Secondary teacher Barbara Bell was invited this week by London's mayor Boris Johnson to speak to head teachers about her new books that can be used to teach Latin in schools where the subject is not usually part of the curriculum.

Mrs Bell, who in 2009 was awarded an MBE for services to local and national education, gave a talk to 154 head teachers on her Minimum series.

In 1997, the classics teacher wrote the first book of the series, which is used by teachers of pupils of all abilities.

Both Mrs Bell and Mr Johnson are members of The Classics Round Table, a working group which helps promote the teaching of Latin in state schools across the country.

In other related news, London mayor Boris Johnson has said that more state schools should provide lessons in the classics, in news which may affect secondary teachers of Latin and ancient Greek.
