The delivery of a high-quality education to pupils by those in science-based teaching jobs is essential to the future of UK industry, it has been claimed.

According to the director of the National Science Learning Centre, Professor Sir John Holman, the maintenance of high standards among staff in such education jobs is vital for ensuring the UK's science, technology and engineering industries continue to aid the nation's economic recovery.

Sir John referred to high-quality science education provision as "a mission that is of great importance to various stakeholders in this country, from industry, academia, learned societies and the major science-related foundations".

"It seems an extremely important thing for this country to have a very strong scientific and technological base", he added.

His comments came during a lecture entitled Raising the Profile of Science in Schools and Society, delivered last week at the Institution of Mechanical Engineers in London.

The lecture formed part of the Westminster Education Forum Keynote Seminar, designed to analyse key elements of the government's current science strategy.
