London borough to expand schools by 2,000 places

Education chiefs in Kingston are planning to expand local primary schools by 2,000 places, in news which may affect those seeking teaching jobs.

Local authorities are trying to deal with the massive increase in demand for classroom places by permanently expanding schools across the borough by 405 places in each year group, a local news report has said.

"This current strategy details how Kingston will permanently provide an additional 13.5 forms of entry in reception from September 2011 onwards to meet the expected future demand for places," a council spokesperson was quoted as saying in the Hounslow Chronicle.

A series of meetings at each of the schools involved in the permanent expansion scheme have been organised for later in March and April.

In other news, about 2,000 extra places are to be created in five primary schools in Newham under a new £17 million-plus government grant, according to the Newham Recorder.
