Primary teachers cannot be held responsible for the failure of parents to spend time helping their children develop communication skills, it has been claimed.
A new study by speech and language difficulties charity I CAN found that 50 per cent of children aged zero to 11 cause concern to their parents regarding their development of communication skills.
However Sue Fieldman, editor of the Good Schools Guide, said the results are not a negative reflection of the role primary teachers play in communication development.
She said: "Parents cannot put the blame […] onto schools. In fact schools are really only a secondary source of communication skills.
"It is what the children learn at home and communicate at home that is the crucial element to learning how to interact with society."
It is an assertion that appears to be backed by the study, which found that 54 per cent of parents surveyed felt they did not spend enough time helping their children develop their communication skills.
