Local authorities are attempting to make life easier for those in
teaching jobs by taking action against parents who arrange family holidays during term-time, it has been revealed.
A new survey by BBC Online has revealed a ten per cent increase among England's 20 largest local authorities in incidences of parents being fined for taking their children on holiday when they should be at school.
Ron Collinson, chief attendance officer in Liverpool, said: "They always seem to take them at key times for the schools, when we're trying to settle them into new environments or […] at times that coincide with exams."
Liverpool has the highest rate of increase in parental fines for absent children, with a 50 per cent rise in the first term of the 2009-2010 academic year, compared to the same period in 2008-09.
In October last year the Department for Children, Schools and Families showed a rise in the number of primary pupils absent from school without permission in the first two terms of the 2008-09 academic year.
