SEN teachers to receive extra training

Staff in teaching jobs responsible for children with special educational needs are to be given additional training, the schools secretary has announced.

Ed Balls has announced a series of reforms designed to improve the experiences of pupils with learning disabilities, including making an extra £4 million of government funding available for the training of SEN teachers in England.

Mr Balls said: "We want every parent and child, in every local authority, to receive the best support possible.

"Children with special needs are doing better in school than ever before, but more can be done to ensure these young people achieve their potential."

The new reforms, which will also include the establishment of a support line for parents, follow a recent inquiry into special needs support in England which found widespread dissatisfaction with education services among parents of SEN pupils.

Government advisor Philippa Stobbs recently claimed some schools are labelling pupils falling behind with their studies as SEN in order to boost league table positions.
