National Strategies 'helping those in teacher jobs'

Staff in teaching jobs feel the government's National Strategies have helped them improve school standards in England, Ofsted has found.

A new report into the national programme by the regulator found that many people in teaching jobs said the scheme, which prescribes teaching methods such as literacy and numeracy hours, has helped them focus on raising standards.

Schools Minister Vernon Coaker said: "A relentless focus on the 3Rs, coupled with record investment and rapid intervention, has led to the highest ever school standards.

"Ofsted's report is clear that the national strategies have made a real impact on teaching and learning."

However, the report also criticised the number of initiatives prescribed centrally by the Department for Children, Schools and Families, stating that many institutions struggle to keep track of which schemes are actually making a difference to pupils experience.

Ofsted's full title is the Office for Standards in Education, Children's Services and Skills.
