Brown tells London school of senior education jobs plan

Prime Minister Gordon Brown has told a London school of new plans to increase parent power over senior-level education jobs in England.

Parents dissatisfied with the performance of local schools would have the power to instigate a vote on whether local authorities should remove ineffective school leaders and use a fresh education recruitment drive to bring in an alternative team.

Addressing the north London school, he said: "We simply will not accept second best when it comes to the future of our children.

"I stand for excellence in education and I stand for excellence in education for all […] because education is a ladder to social mobility."

Mr Brown said the need for a ballot would be established by local surveys, which would assess levels of parent satisfaction with local education provisions.

It is the Prime Minister's second major education announcement in a week, following the unveiling of plans to expand the academy programme to the primary sector.
