Government plans academy teacher jobs expansion

A higher proportion of teaching jobs will be available in academy institutions if the government's plan for expanding the sector goes ahead.

Local authorities would have the ability to call in sponsor companies, universities and colleges to take over underperforming primary and secondary institutions under the proposals, resulting in 'chains' of schools.

Prime Minister Gordon Brown told the Guardian: "Local authorities will be able to draw on the world-class excellence in these new chains to drive up standards in weaker schools.

"When schools partner with other schools […] standards are raised for all - the stronger schools and the weaker schools."

Universities and colleges in Hull, Bradford and Chester are currently in charge of education jobs at more than one institution, while Carpetright tycoon Lord Harris is on an approved list of sponsors for multiple institutions, the newspaper reports.

Lord Harris, who has worked in the carpet retail industry for 52 years, already sponsors several academy institutions across England.
