More teaching vacancies could become available in Birkenhead as a consultation opens to discuss plans to create a new £30 million academy school in the area.

Wirral Council has launched a consultation on plans to merge two secondary schools and create a new academy in its place.

The new Merseyside academy would replace Park High and Rock Ferry high schools which have suffered falling pupil rates for the last few years.

The consultation process will involve asking parents of pupils at both schools for their views.

Secondary teachers could be employed at the new academy, which will specialise in science, technology, health and social care.

Six schools, including the two set to be replaced by the academy, in Wirral did not meet the 30 per cent of A* to C GCSE grades necessary to pass the government's National Challenge programme.

In 2008, when the plans were first brought to public attention, Wirral councillor Phil Davies said the academy proposal was "huge news" for the area to give youngsters in Birkenhead "the very best opportunities in the years ahead".

The consultation period runs from February 24th until April 7th.ADNFCR-2164-ID-19630032-ADNFCR
