Primary and secondary teachers would be in line to benefit from a £2.5 billion funding boost for schools if the Liberal Democrat Party comes to power at the next election.
The party has outlined its approach to education spending from 2011, with a promise to direct more funding into schools in order to improve standards and effect class size reductions, which could result in primary teachers educating fewer pupils at once.
Addressing representatives of children's charity Barnardo's, Liberal Democrat Leader Nick Clegg said: "We must ensure our school system gives every child a chance to fulfil their potential irrespective of their background and where they live."
Approximately £1 billion of the funding required for the renewed schools investment could be raised by recouping up to £1 billion from the existing education budget via "administrative savings" in the Department of Education and its associated quangos, according to the Liberal Democrats.
Mr Clegg represents the constituency of Sheffield Hallam and has been leader of the Liberal Democrats since 2007.
