Importance of teaching jobs 'highlighted by improved school performance'

The importance of securing high quality staff during education recruitment drives has been identified by one headteacher as being the key to school success.

The Lilian Baylis Technology School, in Lambeth, London, is the "seventh most improved school in England", according to its website, and the institution's leader, Gary Phillips, believes much of this turnaround can be attributed to those in teaching jobs at the school.

He told the Guardian: "Together with the rest of the staff we've started to turn the school around.

"I get real satisfaction from seeing a child make progress, and together we're giving Lilian Baylis pupils a chance at a brighter future."

The school was once listed as one of the country's worst in terms of pupil performance, according to the newspaper, and has a challenging mix of pupils, with three-quarters eligible for free school meals, one-fifth refugees or asylum seekers and 10 per cent considered to have special educational needs.
