Tory plans for teaching jobs 'would make little difference'

Giving not-for-profit organisations the power to hire and fire those in teaching jobs as part of a proposed 'free schools' system will do little to boost overall educational standards, it has been claimed.

The Centre of Economic Performance (CEP) has said the Conservative-championed scheme to introduce Swedish-style schools, run by groups of parents or other local sponsors, will not have the same impact as in their country of origin.

An article in the organisation's CentrePiece publication states: "Importing the Swedish model may not make very much difference to the UK's educational status quo.

"Sweden started from a position of no school choice […] In the UK, however, there is already much school choice and a diversity of provision."

The organisation's argument centres on the fact that school pupils in England already have a far wider choice of schools available to them than Swedish children did when the original scheme was implemented.
