Education staff employed in secondary teacher jobs may find themselves in charge of awarding final grades to some pupils this year, it has be revealed.
A total of 14 institutions were forced to cancel 190 individual GCSE, A-Level and AS-Level exams this year because of heavy snowfall, which may result in students requesting coursework marks be used to determine their overall subject grades.
However, Ofqual chairperson Kathleen Tattersall said the vast majority of schools in England had been able to proceed with exams as scheduled thanks to the efforts of education staff, including those in
teaching jobs.
She said: "I would like to place on record my sincere thanks to the candidates, their families, head teachers, college leaders, teachers, examinations officers [and] support staff for their hard work and dedication which enabled the majority of candidates to take their examinations."
Ofqual is the regulatory watchdog responsible for monitoring qualifications, examinations and assessments in England.
