Primary teachers could soon be seeing an uptake in after-school clubs as a new government campaign launched today targets parents to help raise awareness of the range of activities, services and advice available through schools.
More than 20,000 schools are already offering access to services for local families, and thousands of children and parents could be benefiting from the extended activities run by people in teacher jobs.
Primary teachers may find their school offers before and after-school activities such as homework clubs, sport, music and arts activities, easy access to specialist services including speech and language therapy and mental health services.
The government is funding £200 million from 2008-11 for the extended services subsidy, meaning parents could be made more aware of services on offer for themselves and their children.
Schools may also be offering adult and family learning and computer courses, and the latest drive will target parents in the hope that more children, especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds, will take advantage of the range of activities run by those in teacher jobs.
Some schools could even be offering childcare from 8am to 6pm for 48 weeks a year for primary schools, on the school site or through local providers, with parenting and family support available, the government states.
