Securing high quality candidates for teaching jobs and providing them with proper support has been identified by a leading union as central to improving the state school sector.

The Association of Teachers and Lecturers (ATL) has responded to a recent survey showing that 76 per cent of Britons support an expansion of the grammar schools sector by saying that the need for such institutions could be negated by improved teaching across the board.

A spokesperson for ATL said: "Good teachers should be able to make sure that all the kids in their class are getting an appropriate education.

"It is about giving teachers the freedom to make sure that the brightest are being stretched and that those who […] struggle […] are not being left behind."

The spokesperson added that the union also believes children do better in state school environments that represent a more diverse mix of society, which are more reflective of the world they will encounter outside the school gates.ADNFCR-2164-ID-19618864-ADNFCR
