Primary teachers 'misunderstood by Conservatives'

A union for education professionals has claimed that the Conservative Party's plan for free schools "misunderstands" the needs of primary teachers.

According to the Association of Teachers and Lecturers (ATL) a proposal to allow staff employed in primary level teaching jobs to establish cooperatives that can take over the running of such schools could lead to a more fragmented education sector.

Dr Mary Bousted, general secretary of ATL, said: "Education staff want more autonomy over the professional issues.

"[However], they recognise they are part of local networks of schools […] which require planned co-ordination if they are to provide the best opportunities for all young people."

She added that the union has also noted concern among education professionals over any proposals which endorse the running of schools in a way more akin to businesses.
