A new report from the Welsh Affairs Committee has recommended that powers over pay for staff in education jobs should not be devolved to the National Assembly.

However, the committee did give its approval to the majority of plans proposed by the Welsh Government for devolving further powers relating to school governance to Wales, agreeing that it would boost educational standards in the country.

Dr Hywel Francis, committee chair, is quoted by eGov monitor as saying: "Our report highlights a number of specific issues for review and consideration by the Assembly government.

"We recommend approval of this Order which is consistent with policy aims and is underpinned by a drive to improve education in Wales."

He added that the committee had decided responsibility for the financial package awarded to those in teaching jobs should remain with Westminster to avoid pay levels between the two countries becoming fragmented.

Dr Francis is the Labour Member of Parliament for the constituency of Aberavon.ADNFCR-2164-ID-19614301-ADNFCR
