The Conservative Party's planned free schools will not deliver a higher quality of education than the present system, it has been claimed.

In an interview with the BBC's Newsnight programme the head of the Swedish National Agency for Education, upon whose system the Conservatives have based their proposal, said the schools' introduction would not lead to improved exam results.

Per Thulberg said: "This competition between schools that was one of the reasons for introducing the new schools has not led to better results.

"[The] new schools have, in general, better standards, but it has to do with their parents and backgrounds. They come from well-educated families."

If the plans are realised, staff in education jobs under the free school system would be working in institutions established by parents and independent organisations, but funded by the state.

The Swedish National Agency for Education is the country's main administrative body with responsibility for the public school system.ADNFCR-2164-ID-19610541-ADNFCR
