Places are still available on the government's Future Leaders scheme for those in teaching jobs who want to make the move to school leadership.

The Future Leaders programme was designed to train primary and secondary teachers as a new generation of 'superheads', ready to take charge and transform the fortunes of some of England's most challenging comprehensives.

Heath Monk, chief executive of Future Leaders, also told the Guardian: "Inner-city schools find it hardest to attract talent.

"[But] the quality of leadership is absolutely directly related to the success of a school. If you have an outstanding head, then the school will become outstanding."

Application for this year's scheme are down on the same time 12 months ago, according to Mr Monk, who has attributed the decline to widespread uncertainty about the implication of potential future budget cuts on teaching jobs.

Education staff who considering upgrading their teaching jobs to headships have until February 16th to apply for this year's programme.ADNFCR-2164-ID-19610535-ADNFCR
