The government has promised "personalised" tuition for struggling secondary pupils as part of a new £20 million education investment in England.

Under the Foundation Learning initiative, which will be rolled out in time for the start of the forthcoming school year, staff in education jobs in secondary schools will provide extra support for students struggling with GCSE level study.

Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for the Department of Children, Schools and Families Iain Wright MP said: "We are making historic reforms at 14-19 level, and Foundation Learning is a vital element of this programme.

"There is strong demand for Foundation Learning and there is growing evidence it has a very positive impact on young people's attainment."

Pupils receiving help as part of the programme will receive additional tuition in small-sized classes from staff in teaching jobs, who will focus on subjects such as English, maths and ICT, as well as vocationally-focused study.

Mr Wright's parliamentary responsibilities include policies relating to apprenticeships and work-based learning.ADNFCR-2164-ID-19608723-ADNFCR
