The Welsh Assembly Government has announced plans to allocate an additional £25 million to ease tuition fee pressures on students.
Speaking today (December 9th) during a visit to the University of Glamorgan, education minister Leighton Andrews said: "Helping Welsh students from all backgrounds to pursue their studies in higher education is a key policy which I am determined to protect. This funding is evidence of how we are helping students to get the best possible start in life."
The politician, who toured a new science laboratory during his visit, encouraged higher education institutions to concentrate research on established strengths rather than try to compete in new areas with established players.
Elsewhere, students and schoolchildren from across England have descended on Westminster as MPs prepare to vote on the government's policy of raising tuition fees.
Those attending university from 2011 may be forced to pay up to £9,000 per year for tuition.
