British pupils are sliding down international education rankings, it was revealed this week.
The Programme for International Student Assessment (Pisa) report published by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development showed that England currently ranks 25th out of 65 developed countries for reading and 16th for science.
Education secretary Michael Gove said the document underlines the urgent need for reform.
"Other regions and nations have succeeded in closing the gap and in raising attainment for all students at the same time. They have made opportunity more equal, democratised access to knowledge and placed an uncompromising emphasis on higher standards all at the same time," he commented.
Mr Gove said England will take inspiration from countries such as Singapore, Finland and Hong Kong.
He added that education systems in these nations share common features, such as encouraging professional collaboration and modernising the curriculum.
