Education secretary Michael Gove has announced that schools will receive extra funding to help make sport be at the centre of education, those looking for teaching jobs have been told.
It comes as part of the coalition's new approach to PE, which is aiming to raise the participation level of students.
The Department for Education will pay school sport partnerships for the 2011 school year at a cost of £47 million, while also spending a further £65 million to enable every secondary school to release one PE teacher for a day each to ensure that the system is fully embedded.
"I want competitive sport to be at the centre of a truly rounded education that all schools offer. But this must be led by schools and parents, not by top down policies from Whitehall," said Mr Gove.
However, shadow education minister Toby Perkins said that this change of policy was "just the latest shambles" by the government.
