Welsh education minister Leighton Andrews has welcomed the introduction of a new scheme to encourage primary pupils to read Welsh language books.
The Prosiect X initiative is aimed at boys in particular and includes a wide range of books that have been adapted for a Welsh audience.
Mr Andrews noted that there is a link between the amount that primary pupils read and their academic achievements.
"The Prosiect X scheme is helping us achieve this aim with a variety of Welsh books to inspire children to try reading," he explained.
"This scheme also supports the aims of our Welsh-medium Education Strategy. Developing Welsh language skills is essential if we are to achieve our aim of creating a bilingual Wales. By providing Welsh books at various levels Prosiect X provides children with an entertaining approach to developing their Welsh language skills."
Figures from the National Literacy Trust show that 39 per cent of young girls read every day, compared to 28 per cent of boys.
