By placing the best-performing professionals into the most-challenging teaching jobs, Sheffield council has managed to boost educational standards across the city.

Outlining the reasons behind the new 'good' rating given by Ofsted inspectors to education and children's services in the South Yorkshire city, the cabinet member for children and young people's services, Councillor Colin Ross, has explained that the 'lead head teacher' scheme has been highly effective in boosting standards.

Indeed, the initiative, which sees top talent drafted into the toughest teaching jobs in Sheffield, has been praised for helping the council move on from the 'satisfactory' Ofsted rating achieved last year.

More broadly, Councillor Ross told the Sheffield Star: "In the last two and a half years education has been well and truly moved to the front of the agenda and we are now seeing the benefits of this change."

This comes as councillors in one other Yorkshire city, York, have unveiled plans to revamp the existing system of offering pupils the chance to enjoy music lessons.
