Governors and headteachers at top-performing schools should consider "taking control" and converting to academy status.
This is according to schools minister Lord Hill, who said that 80 schools have opened as academies since the start of the current term.
In an open letter to the National Governors' Association, he said it is encouraging that so many outstanding schools are taking up this opportunity.
"We know academies have had a dramatic impact where they already exist. The recent National Audit Office report highlights the continued success they are having, and the experience of the city technology colleges in England and other reforms across the world has shown that giving schools autonomy successfully drives up performance," Lord Hill commented.
He referred to governors as the "unsung heroes and heroines" of the education system.
Speaking recently, Andrew Fielder, principal at Sandy Hill Primary School in Cornwall, said schools converting to academy status should employ a good project manager and listen to all points of view.
