Performance of some academies 'has not been a success'

While some academies have performed well, others have done "absolutely appallingly".

This is the opinion of Sue Fieldman, regional editor of the Good Schools Guide, who said it is a "very mixed picture".

"It is not yet the time that middle-income families are going to stop struggling to pay school fees or struggling to get into the catchment areas of the top performing schools [in order] to risk their child's education at a new academy. I think it is much more of a mixed picture," she explained.

There is good and bad in the academy system, which is much like the main education system, Ms Fieldman commented.

Educationalists, parents and teachers have all got to work together to ensure that any new school is started "along the right lines" and provides a good educational experience for parents and children, she added.

The government announced earlier this year that 142 schools are set to convert to academy status this year.
