Author Nick Hornby has launched a new project encouraging schoolchildren to put pen to paper and get creative.

Known as the Ministry of Stories, it involves a series of writing workshops at St Monica's RC Primary School in Hoxton, the BBC reports.

The author explained that "humour, intrigue and creativity" are at the centre of the project.

He told the news provider: "The aim of the Ministry of Stories has been to create a space where young people can gain free workshops and one-to-one mentoring with writers, artists and teachers.

"The Ministry of Stories is a place to inspire young people and encourage them to engage with story-telling at every level."

The scheme is being funded by the National Lottery and JJ Charitable Trust and supported by his fellow authors Zadie Smith and Roddy Doyle.

In a recent article for the Guardian, writer Jonny Zucker claimed that being visited by an author can significantly boost children's writing confidence and improve their skills.

He suggested they can learn more in one day in a workshop than they would in a term of normal classes.
