The government is to increase the number of National Leaders of Education (NLEs) in the UK from 393 to 1,000, it has been revealed.

Speaking at the National College New Heads conference in London, who said the role of NLEs will also be strengthened in a white paper, with incentives being given for the most dramatic improvements in performance.

The minister noted that good schools are the product of solid leadership.

"But there are also many schools which are still not giving children the start in life they deserve. We still have one of the most unequal education systems in the world and half of young people leave school without the basic qualifications you need to succeed," Mr Gove commented.

He added that the government will invest in recruiting leading head teachers to turn around weaker schools.

"The coalition government is relentlessly focused on making our school system one of the best in the world and making opportunity more equal," Mr Gove added.

Mr Gove announced earlier this month that a review is to be carried out into Key Stage 2 testing.
