Parents 'go to any length for school place'

Although many parents find school admissions systems confusing and stressful, millions claim they would go to any lengths to get their child into a good school.

Research carried out by Netmums found that more than half of parents would leave their current home and relocate in order to get into their preferred choice.

A further 43 per cent said they would do "whatever it takes".

One in six respondents said they favour the use of a lottery-style system to decide places.

Applying for a secondary school is both terrifying and stressful - as a parent you know that this decision will impact on not only your child's education but also on their friendship circle, social life, extracurricular activities and sense of self," said Netmums co-founder Siobhan Freegard.

Charity Barnardo's stated earlier this year that the complexity of admissions systems is putting children from poorer backgrounds at a disadvantage as their parents may not fully understand the process.
