Sandwell Council in the Black Country is launching legal action over the scrapping of a whole host of school rebuilding projects across the UK.

The council has joined those of Luton, Waltham and Nottingham Forest, who are all unhappy with the axing of the Building Schools for the Future scheme in July, which will affect some 700 different projects.

Council leader Darren Cooper said: "We are taking legal action because the government's decision is irrational, unfair and short-sighted."

Education secretary Michael Gove announced the news in the summer, stating that all of the projects which were not signed off by January 1st 2010 would be halted.

However, Mr Cooper explained this was unfair because if councils had been told this, they would have endeavoured to make sure the deadline was hit.

According to the Local Government Association, some £260 million has been wasted by education authorities and construction companies on cancelled bids following the government axe.
