Government spending review 'is a mixed bag for education'

The government's spending review, which was presented yesterday (October 20th), is a mixed bag for schools.

This is according to the Association of Teachers and Lecturers (ATL), which pointed out that schools are not isolated from society and wider public sector cuts are likely to hit those who have the least and increase barriers to learning.

"However, we congratulate the secretary of state for education on having successfully fought for investment in education in this tough spending review. It was a real achievement to have the schools budget ring-fenced and gain modest rises in funding for schools," said ATL general secretary Dr Mary Bousted.

She added that this should end some of the wider redundancy talk that members have been hearing in recent months.

Established in 1884, the organisation currently represents more than 160,000 teachers and lecturers across England, Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland, with members in both the maintained and independent sectors.
