Move to teaching 'can be rewarding'

A move from a career in business or industry to a career in teaching can be daunting, but is also likely to be rewarding in a number of respects, an expert has argued.

Speaking following the release of findings from the Training and Development Agency for Schools which found that the number of people training to be teachers after working in other professions has risen, senior professional officer at the Voice union Ian Toone said that a move to teaching is rewarding for a number of reasons.

"Those entering the profession from another career will find it challenging, demanding and sometimes daunting and frustrating, but it is also very rewarding as it involves inspiring, skilling and educating future generations," he said.

He added that the profile of education has been raised in recent years, suggesting that this has helped to encourage more people to consider a career in teaching.

Fast-track training courses with decent funding have also helped to encourage more people to consider becoming teachers, he suggested.
