Is it time for those in teaching jobs to 'hit the road'?

Staff employed in education jobs may want to set an example to their pupils by walking to school, following news of a new government-backed campaign.

The Department of Health (DoH) has confirmed it is to invest £800,000 in the Living Street group's 'Walk Once a Week' initiative, which rewards pupils with collectable badges for walking to and from their education institutions.

Tony Armstrong, chief executive of Living Streets, said: "We have seen a decline in the past 30 years in people walking to school.

"We all know that child obesity is a really big problem, and walking to school is one of the easiest ways of getting in some exercise both for kids, and also for parents."

According to Mr Armstrong, walking to school not only benefits the environment by taking more cars off the road, but also encourages children to engage with their local communities by making them more conscious of their local area.

Living Streets is a national charity which represents the interests of UK pedestrians.
