Primary teachers prepare for 'biggest pupil influx for a decade'

Record numbers of pupils are expected to enter the state school primary system this year, in news which could provide a boost for those seeking education jobs.

Demand for primary places in 2010-11 has led to predictions of a ten year high in the number of new pupils, attributed to many parents moving children from the private to state sector in light of the ongoing recession, as well as a recent baby boom.

Minister for Schools and Learners Vernon Coaker said: "We are aware of the continuing pressure that some authorities will continue to face with growing numbers of primary pupils for several years.

"This will be an ¬important consideration for the next spending review in 2011."

Education institutions in Kingston upon Thames, London, are predicting that applications will rise by 28 per cent in 2011, compared to 2009 figures, while Bristol has already seen an eight per cent increase in state school applications this year.

Mr Coaker previously served as Minister of State for Policing, Security and Crime, before being moved to his present post following a 2009 Cabinet reshuffle.
