A special SOS has been issued by English Heritage, which is calling on the government 'Save Old Schools'.

Those seeking education jobs in more traditional surroundings may be interested to know that a recent survey by Building Design magazine found that 70 per cent of completed projects under the Partnership for Schools initiative have been new-builds rather then refurbishments, despite the government promising a 50:50 split.

Chair of English Heritage Lady Andrews said: "Local education authorities need to strike the best balance between replacement and refurbishment.

"[Refurbishment] uses the assets of the community, minimises requirements for new materials and cuts demolition waste."

She added that historic school buildings also enable communities in different regions to retain a sense of identity.

The Partnership for Schools represents a £20 billion government refurbishment and rebuilding programme for primary and secondary schools across England.
