Atheist MP criticised for faith school plan

A leading member of Gordon Brown's Cabinet has been criticised over his decision to send his son to a faith school, despite publicly declaring himself an atheist.

Foreign Secretary David Miliband has opted to send his son to a Church of England primary school more than a mile from his home rather than a local non-faith based institution in closer proximity.

Both institutions were awarded 'outstanding' ratings from education watchdog Ofsted in their latest inspections.

A representative for the school said: "Priority is […] given to children who, with their parents, are committed members of the church and regular worshippers."

The spokesperson added: "Mrs Miliband had been a practising member of the congregation for over a year prior to her application to the school and still attends regularly."

However, both the Conservatives and campaign group Parents Outloud have criticised the Miliband's decision, with the lobbying organisation in particular branding the move "strange".

Mr Miliband has represented the constituency of South Shields since 2001.
