A school in the South West of England has gone from being one of the region's worst performers to one of the best, according to Ofsted.

Symondsbury Church of England VA Primary School in Dorset has been awarded an overall rating of 'outstanding' following an inspection by the education watchdog, making it one of only five institutions in England to achieve the accreditation.

Chairman of school's board of governors Peter Smith told Bridport news: "It shows what a small school can achieve when the dedicated headteacher Helen Farmer, the staff, governors, parents, carers and pupils all pull together, with expert local authority support."

The rating indicates a sea change at the school, which nine years ago was condemned by Ofsted as providing an inadequate standard of education for its pupils.

Ofsted is responsible for the inspection and regulation of a variety of agencies, including childcare, teacher training providers, and schools in the independent and state sectors.ADNFCR-2164-ID-19574251-ADNFCR
