'Improvement' noted in citizenship teaching

Schools inspectorate Ofsted has noted an improvement in the standard of citizenship teaching in England by those in education jobs.

A new report by the watchdog has concluded that while some schools are still struggling to cover all elements of the module, overall teaching standards have improved in the seven years since the subject became a compulsory part of the curriculum.

Ofsted chief inspector Christine Gilbert said: "Citizenship is becoming a well established part of the school curriculum.

"This report highlights the ways in which schools are successfully promoting social responsibility, community involvement and political understanding."

Of the 91 schools examined for the report, just over half were rated as providing a 'good' standard of citizenship teaching, while one institution was listed as 'outstanding'.

Ofsted is the Office for Standards in Education, Children's Services and Skills and conducts hundreds of school inspections each week in England.
